Crimped wire mesh is woven from pre-crimped carbon steel, galvanized steel or stainless steel wire. The crimped intersections hold the wires in position and help maintain the specified opening. It is mainly supplied for screening stone, coal, aggregate and other bulk materials. Lighter specifications are also used for machine guards and industrial partitions. Buyers should specify the clear aperture and wire diameter in millimetres. This avoids confusion between SWG, BWG and other wire-gauge systems.
Specifications
Materials: Carbon steel, galvanized steel or stainless steel
Manufacturing Method: Wire crimped before weaving
Opening: Square opening unless otherwise specified
Aperture Measurement: Clear distance between two adjacent wires
Specification Method: Clear aperture × wire diameter
Weave: Pre-crimped woven construction
Supply Form: Rolls or cut panels, depending on wire diameter and finished stiffness
Dimensions: Made according to the confirmed panel or roll size
Edges: Cut edges or finished edges by order
Required Order Details: Material, clear aperture, wire diameter, width, length, quantity and intended application
ASTM E2016 treats opening, wire diameter, weave and material as separate purchasing parameters. These items should appear individually on the order sheet.

Applications
- Screening stone, gravel and aggregate
- Coal and dry bulk-material sizing
- Machine guards and workshop partitions
- Stainless steel screens for selected food-processing equipment
For direct food contact, stainless steel grade, surface condition and applicable food-contact requirements must be confirmed. Carbon steel and galvanized mesh should not be presented as food-grade material.

Reference Specifications
The following combinations have been recalculated from the supplied data. They are reference production sizes, not guaranteed warehouse stock.
Stainless Steel Crimped Mesh, 18 Mesh × 0.61 mm Wire
A fine woven screen for dry material separation and general processing work. An 18 mesh count with 0.61 mm wire gives a calculated clear opening of approximately 0.80 mm.
Material: Stainless steel, grade to be confirmed
Mesh Count: 18 per inch
Wire Diameter: 0.61 mm
Calculated Aperture: Approximately 0.80 mm
Use: Fine screening and processing screens
Note: Confirm the required stainless steel grade before production.
Fine Crimped Wire Mesh, 16 Mesh × 0.55 mm Wire
This specification provides an opening of approximately 1.04 mm. It can be supplied for light screening, ventilation guards and small-particle separation. It is not intended for heavy impact or large aggregate.
Mesh Count: 16 per inch
Wire Diameter: 0.55 mm
Calculated Opening: Approximately 1.04 mm
Material Options: Carbon steel or stainless steel
Supply: Roll or cut sheet
Application: Light industrial screening and guards
Galvanized Crimped Mesh, 12 Mesh × 0.71 mm Wire
A 12 mesh construction with 0.71 mm wire produces a calculated clear opening of approximately 1.41 mm. The galvanized finish is suitable for general industrial screening where stainless steel is not specified.
Wire Diameter: 0.71 mm
Mesh Count: 12 per inch
Clear Aperture: Approximately 1.41 mm
Material: Galvanized steel wire
Use: Dry-material screening and equipment guards
Order Note: Zinc coating weight must be stated separately when required.
Carbon Steel Crimped Screen, 5.08 Mesh × 2.0 mm Wire
This heavier screen has a calculated aperture of approximately 3.0 mm. The 2.0 mm wire gives the mesh more rigidity than fine woven specifications. It is suitable for industrial sizing and screening of smaller aggregate.
Material: Carbon steel
Wire Diameter: 2.0 mm
Mesh Count: 5.08 per inch
Calculated Aperture: 3.0 mm
Supply Form: Cut panel
Application: Aggregate grading and industrial screening
Heavy Crimped Screen, 1 Mesh × 4.8 mm Wire
With one opening per inch and 4.8 mm wire, the calculated clear aperture is approximately 20.6 mm. This specification is used for coarse screening where a rigid woven surface is required.
Wire Diameter: 4.8 mm
Mesh Count: 1 per inch
Calculated Aperture: Approximately 20.6 mm
Material: Carbon steel
Use: Coarse stone, gravel and bulk-material screening
Installation Note: Panel size and support spacing must be selected according to impact load and screening equipment.
